Glam to Grub - Living a Double Life
When was the last time you played in the rain, crawled through mud or rolled down a grass hill? Because there's just something about having leaves in my hair and dirt under my nails that makes me feel at home; and you'll probably love it too.
I live for Friday afternoons when I can swap my heels for hiking boots, makeup for sunscreen and my hair is messy. My colleagues would be horrified if they ever met the weekend version of me. As soon as I get outside I'm grubby and cartwheeling. There are times when I'm on day three of a hike and think to myself "when was the last time I washed my hands with running water instead of sanitizer?" and then chuckle at the thought of my boss' reaction if they ever knew the answer.
It's no lie that standards of "the norm" drop significantly when participating in adventurous activities. Wearing the same quick-dry shirt for days is totally ok when you're out on a week-long hike, but wear the same outfit to work twice in a week and it's a scandal! I'll happily wear my same sweaty, snotty, dribbled on buff for a few days but as soon as we make it back to the car even my friends are like "ew, you're still wearing that thing?" Umm, yeah, it was fine an hour ago...
What draws us to the double life? I still love treating my feminine side to beauty and fashion through the week, but by the weekend, I'm so ready to spoil the child within. With the availability of adventure products designed for women I get the best of both worlds. I can ride my pink mountain bike with gloves over my fresh manicure, and totally own my space. The outdoors doesn't judge, and neither does the industry.
After a full weekend of being an outdoors grub, I look forward to the next five days of having clean hair, technology and routine. I love having those sacred two days where I can be myself, switch off and not care. I love that on Monday morning, you'd never know the adventures I had; and my colleagues have no idea what they are missing out on.
