We think this hilarious short film sums up women’s surfing experience pretty bang on. "Pear Shaped" is a tip of the cap to the people who shrug off the unique challenges of surfing and choose to go anyway.
We’ve said it before, and we will say it again, there is an awful lot crap out there when it comes to representing women in sport and the outdoors. For every story, interview or photo of women smashing it in her chosen field, there are 100s more of women posing in skimpy outfits, immaculately ‘made up’, airbrushed and standing on the sidelines, reduced to a bimbo or a trophy.
So imagine our joy when we woke up to this little gem from surfer Lauren Hill showing us the reality of surfing and surf culture from a female point of view.
Here is to seeing much more of this in our mainstream media and Instagram feeds in the future.
Oh and high fives to Sanuk who got right behind this great short film.
"Surfing tends to take itself pretty seriously, and women’s surfing carries the extra burden of not only having to be serious, but also be sexy.
Watch as Sanuk surfy sea scribe, Lauren Hill, pokes fun at all that with a little absurdity from the everyday realities of being a woman in the water...
"Pear Shaped" is a tip of the cap to the people who shrug off the unique challenges of surfing and choose to go anyway.
Smile... pass it on!"
